Competition Rules

Setup and Technical Crew
Please complete and submit your Technical Forms (available soon) as early as possible. The host tech crew can accommodate special requests when coordinated in advance. Technical Forms include lighting and mic cues, stage configuration, contact information, and more.

We provide 16 StageRight risers (4′ × 8′), arranged four wide × four deep, with heights in 12-inch increments and stairs. Please do not bring risers. Custom stair/riser configurations may be requested in your Technical Forms.

Special effects and electronic equipment are permitted; please indicate any special equipment and power needs in your Technical Forms. (Note: effects must comply with venue and district safety policies.)

Instrumentation
Advanced ensembles must use live instrumental accompaniment. All other ensembles may perform with a pre-recorded track.

Choirs may bring a portable playback device/system to control their own tracks. Otherwise, provide your track(s) to the host sound crew on the day of your performance. Please do not include pre-recorded vocals in any backing tracks.

We provide a drum set, keyboard, chairs, and music stands. For microphones and general sound control, only the in-house sound system will be used. Standard setup includes five microphones across the front of the stage and one handheld. If you need changes (counts, placement, stands, DI boxes, etc.), specify them in your Technical Forms.

Best practice: bring tracks on a USB drive in common formats (e.g., WAV/MP3), clearly labeled School – Choir – Version, and have a backup.

Timing
Each choir is allotted a total time window that includes load-in, setup, performance, teardown, and load-out. Time limits by division:

  • Middle School (formerly “Junior High”): 20 minutes
  • Novice Ensembles: 20 minutes
  • Intermediate Ensembles: 25 minutes
  • Advanced Bass, Advanced Treble, Tier II Mixed: 30 minutes
  • Advanced Tier I Mixed: 35 minutes

Penalties are assessed in overall scoring if a choir exceeds its allotted time. Coordinate with the host tech crew to ensure a smooth, on-time changeover.

Performers and Guests

Please treat competition volunteers and administrators with respect. Our team’s priority is the safety and positive experience of all guests and performers.

Audience etiquette: remain seated during performances; spectators may enter/exit the Performing Arts Center only between performances. No food or drinks in the theater.

We encourage a “one student, one choir” policy. Please avoid featuring students in multiple ensembles, particularly across advanced, intermediate, and novice divisions. If you anticipate students performing in more than one ensemble (bass choirs excepted), contact the host in advance to discuss schedule impacts.

Recording: No general videography or photography is permitted in the theater during performances. Participating choirs may designate one or two individuals to record for their group from the designated area. (No tripods in aisles; follow usher directions.)

Backstage: only one performing group is permitted backstage/onstage at a time. Do not enter stage or setup areas unless your ensemble is called.

Campus policy: No controlled substances, vaping/tobacco, alcohol, weapons, or prop weapons are allowed on campus at any time.

Scoring

Our compeition adjudication is managed by Carmen Scoring System.
